The second horseman of the apocalypse by SPartanen The second horseman of the apocalypse by SPartanen
After my painting of death as the fourth horseman I was asked to do all of the horsemen. So here's the second one, War.

Inspired by war in 'Darksiders'.

"When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come and see!" Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword."

the rest of the horsemen I've done:

A work in progress for the last one:

the four horsemen are Conquest, War, Famine and Death, at least in the bible. I haven't done Conquest yet.

Conquest? Hmm.. Famine, Pestilence, War, and Death.. I think I am thinking about the new found distinction. I read that The pale horse is/was conquest and then became the green/rotten horse pestilence. But good work! I love the horsemen!

According to wikipedia and bibles I've come across it's Conquest on a white horse, War on a red horse, Famine on a black horse and Death on a pale/green horse. but in pop culture its more common with Pestilence.

Cheers!

I thought it was Death, War, Famine, and Pestilence? Well, at least that's how it is in the show Supernatural. xD

That's the more 'pop culture' version of the four horsemen.

It doesn't really look red. At first I thought it was the first horse Conquest.

I tried to make the horses 'realistic' and bring out their color by atmosphere and light. So tried to make War be 'red-brown' and use fire to get the 'fiery red' feeling.

I guess, but another way would be attempting that with a chestnut horse or rowan colored one. Some horses have coats that are very reddish in appearance in the right light.

Grew up near horses and wanting to work with them, so I studied quite a deal. Looking forward to seeing that pic of Conquest once it comes up. Or are you switching it for the new stylized 4 horseman that we have these days called Pestilence?

Okay, I hate to be a pounce-trifle, but War is the First Horseman. It goes: War rides forth first, then Famine, then Plague, and then Death.

Conquest was first, War was second, Famine was third, and Death was fourth. You have an inaccurate representation.

6:2  And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

6:3  And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.

6:4  And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

6:5  And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

6:6  And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

6:7  And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.

6:8  And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Revelations 6: 2-8

Plague was never mentioned. In fact, Pestilence and Death could be interpreted as being the same entity.

you might be right. I'm not much into the bible, just went with the text I found about the horsemen.

"When the Lamb opened the second seal... ...Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword."

and wikipedia "Conquest, War, Famine, and Death". but yeah, you shouldn't go with wikipedia blindly. :)

Yep. Conquest, War, Famine and Death would be the more accurate reading. :) Source: [link]
